La diaspora syriaque-orthodoxe de Jérusalem. Pèlerins, réfugiés et fabrique communautaire à l’époque ottomane et mandataire 1831-1948

This book examines the nature of the Syriac Orthodox diaspora of Jerusalem between 1831 and 1948 through a compiled set of the community’s baptismal registers preserved in the library of the Monastery of Saint Mark in Jerusalem. Focusing on a city that was never a major stronghold of this Church, it traces how the Jacobite patriarchal vicariate nonetheless underwent significant transformations from the era of the Tanzimat reforms to the end of the British Mandate. Over this period, the Monastery of Saint Mark, the core of communal life, evolved from a modest center serving a small flock and the occasional pilgrim into a place of refuge for survivors of the Sayfo, the genocide perpetrated in Tur ʿAbdin in 1915. By situating the Syriac Orthodox of Jerusalem within the broader context of Ottoman and then Mandate Palestine, the book sheds light on the social and religious mechanisms that shaped their integration into the city.
